Hike and bike trail segment closed for a month
A segment of the San Gabriel River Trail, also known as the hike and bike trail, will be closed for four weeks starting on Nov. 27. The closure is for reconstruction of the trail surface to meet gradient limits of current accessibility guidelines.
The trail segment is a 0.6-mile concrete section from Rivery Park to a point in San Gabriel Park west of the confluence of the two forks of the San Gabriel River. Other segments of the trail will remain open, including the loop around San Gabriel Park.
The trail work should be completed by Dec. 22, weather permitting.
In the future, other segments of the San Gabriel River Trail from Rivery Park to Booty’s Road Park will be closed for accessibility improvements.

Georgetown Parks and Recreation will offer camps for students during the Thanksgiving break Nov. 20 and 21. Pricing and schedules vary for each program.
Participants can select from two camps:
- Camp Goodwater is offered for children ages 5-12. The camp includes a variety of activities, such as gym games, trips to local parks, and seasonal arts and crafts. The cost is $35 for Georgetown residents and $45 for nonresidents.
- Adventure Camp is offered for children ages 11-14. The camp offers an opportunity for youth to be exposed to outdoor adventure activities and challenges in a fun, safe and healthy environment. The cost is $45 for Georgetown residents and $55 for nonresidents.

Adults with Disabilities Dance at Georgetown Community Center
The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a dance for adults age 18 and older with disabilities on Friday, Oct. 27, from 6-8 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center, 445 E. Morrow St. The theme is Halloween and costumes are encouraged.
Admission is $5 for participants and includes a meal. Advanced registration is recommended. Only cash or check will be taken at the door. There is no charge for family members or caregivers, and they must remain present at all times.

City of Georgetown hosts Halloween Festival on Oct. 26
The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Halloween Festival on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center, 445 E. Morrow St.
The Halloween Festival, now in its 23rd year, will feature a free Trick-or-Treat Village, along with carnival-style games, food, and a hayride.
Attendees are encouraged to participate in the free costume contest, sponsored by Suddenlink. Costume contest categories and times are as follows: Newborn-2 years at 5:45 p.m.; 3-5 years at 6:15 p.m.; 6-8 years at 6:45 p.m.; and 9-10 years at 7:15 p.m.
Carnival games are 25 cents per ticket, and one or more tickets are required for each game, activity or concession. The hayride through San Gabriel Park will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Hayride tickets are $2 for children ages 1-4 and $3 for age 5 and older. Only cash will be accepted, and quarters and small bills are appreciated.
For the first time this year, music and entertainment will be provided by The Georgetown Project and the Assets After-school Alliance, as part of the national Lights On After-school event, which calls attention to the importance of after-school programs for America’s children, families and communities.

City of Georgetown hosts Pirate Party on Aug. 4
The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department presents the fourth annual Pirate Party on Friday, Aug. 4, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.
This end of summer celebration is for children ages 2-8 years old. In addition to swimming in the outdoor pool, there will be a variety of pirate-themed games and activities, along with a raffle drawing featuring prizes from Edible Arrangements, Sonic, Raising Cane’s and Pinot’s Palette.
Regular pool fees apply: free (age newborn-3), $2 (ages 4-18 and seniors age 55 and older) and $3 (ages 19-54). Georgetown Recreation Center members get in free.

Parks and Recreation Department awarded $200,000 trail grant
The City of Georgetown was awarded a $200,000 trail grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in early June.
This grant will help fund a nearly half-mile concrete trail expansion from San Gabriel Park along the San Gabriel River to the Katy Crossing subdivision. The project will also include bridges, fencing, signage and a drinking fountain.
Design of the trail will coincide with Phase 2 of San Gabriel Park improvements, which is underway. Construction is expected to start in spring 2018.
The grant is a part of a $3.46 million grant program to help enhance 22 motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects throughout the state, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
City of Georgetown hosts Dive-In Movie on June 17
The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department presents “Shark Tale” (PG) on Saturday, June 17, at the Williams Drive Pool, 3201 Williams Drive.
The pool opens at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at sunset, about 8:15 p.m. Moviegoers are welcome to bring their own flotation device, which must be translucent and smaller than 4 feet.
Regular pool fees apply: free (infants ages newborn to 3), $2 (ages 4-18 and age 55 and older) and $3 (ages 19-54). Please bring small bills only, and plan to arrive early, as attendance will be capped for this event.

Daddy Daughter Dance returns to Georgetown on June 23
Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation is hosting the Fourth Annual Daddy Daughter Dance on Friday, June 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center, 445 E. Morrow St.
Girls age 4 and older are invited to attend with their father or another acceptable escort, such as a granddad, uncle or older brother. The theme is “Boots & Bling,” and attendees are encouraged to wear a western outfit.
In addition to dancing, this popular event features refreshments and light snacks, and each young lady will receive a bandana. To remember the special occasion, professional portrait packages will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $15 per person in advance and $20 per person at the door. Advance tickets are now on sale at parks.georgetown.org or at the Georgetown Recreation Center, Georgetown Tennis Center or Parks and Recreation Administration Building. Tickets are nonrefundable.
All proceeds benefit Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation, a nonprofit organization who supports the City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department in providing programs and facilities to promote the social, cultural and recreational well-being of all Georgetown residents.

Water Safety Day at the Georgetown Recreation Center on May 20
City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation will host a free Water Safety Day event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Georgetown Recreation Center outdoor pool, 1003 N. Austin Ave.
The educational family event is designed to increase public awareness about drowning prevention and water safety as we head into the summer swim season. Attendees will learn important safety topics such as drowning prevention, water rescue skills and proper life jacket use.
Vendors include the Georgetown Fire Department, Georgetown Camp Goodwater, Georgetown Adventure Camp, Georgetown Learn to Swim, the American Red Cross, Colin’s Hope and the Lake Georgetown Corps of Engineers.
Once attendees visit all of the vendor booths, they will receive a discount on a City of Georgetown seasonal swim pass or summer swim lessons. Attendees are also welcome to stay and swim, and daily pool fees will be waived for this event. Children 6 and younger must have a guardian actively participating with them in the water at all times.
