The Georgetown Public Library partners with Austin Opera for three engaging events centered around John Steinbeck’s classic novella Of Mice & Men. Each of the three events will focus on a film adaptation, the book, or the opera adaptation, and all are free and open to the public.
John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” was published in 1937 and tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, migrant workers during the Great Depression. The book has long been required reading in schools, and is also a frequently banned or challenged book.
Georgetown Public Library Events
The library’s film screening and book discussion will provide food for thought, while the final Opera Preview event will include both commentary and performance.
The three Georgetown Public Library events are:
- Of Mice and Men Film Screening Friday, January 8, 2016 at 7 pm in the GPL Friends Room: John Steinbeck’s classic “Of Mice and Men” comes to life in this film adaptation starring Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. Directed by Sinise from an adaptation by Oscar winner Horton Foote, this “flawless miracle of movie-making” is a must-see. Austin Opera will be on hand to talk about the connection between the novella, film, and opera.
- Of Mice and Men Book Discussion Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2 pm in the GPL Hewlett Room: Join Georgetown Public Library for a book discussion about the novella. A member of the Of Mice and Men opera cast will talk about the opera and its connection to the original novella.
- Of Mice and Men Opera Preview Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 3 pm in the GPL Hewlett Room: Austin Opera will present a preview of Carlisle Floyd’s opera adaptation. This informative discussion will include vocal selections from the opera.
Austin Opera’s Of Mice & Men Community Connections is a project done in partnership with Central Texas cultural organizations including the University of Texas Humanities Institute, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin ISD, Round Rock ISD, Austin Public Library Foundation, Georgetown Public Library, and the Paramount Theater. Each partner event will provide a different perspective on Steinbeck’s classic work, and explore its relevance today.
