Water Safety Day on May 19 at the Georgetown Recreation Center

The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department will host a free Water Safety Day event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the Georgetown Recreation Center outdoor pool, 1003 N. Austin Ave.

The educational family event is designed to increase public awareness about drowning prevention and water safety as we head into the summer swim season. Attendees will learn important safety topics such as drowning prevention, water rescue skills, and proper life jacket use.

Participating organizations include the Georgetown Fire Department, Georgetown Camp Goodwater, Georgetown Adventure Camp, Georgetown Learn to Swim, Colin’s Hope and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Once attendees visit all of the organizations, they will receive a discount on a seasonal swim pass or summer swim lessons. Attendees are also welcome to stay and swim, and daily pool fees will be waived for this event. Children age 6 and younger must have a guardian actively participating with them in the water at all times.

City of Georgetown hosts ‘Coco’ on May 11

The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department presents “Coco” (PG) on Friday, May 11, in San Gabriel Park. The event will take place on the soccer fields located behind the Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.

This is a free community event. The event starts at sunset, about 8:15 p.m. Moviegoers are welcome to bring blankets, chairs and picnics, and are encouraged to arrive early for free popcorn and children’s activities and games beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Adults with Disabilities Dance at Georgetown Community Center on May 4

The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a dance for adults age 18 and older with disabilities Friday, May 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center, 445 E. Morrow St. The theme is Fiesta.

Admission is $5 for participants and includes a meal. Advanced registration is recommended. Only cash or check will be taken at the door. There is no charge for family members or caregivers, and they must remain present at all times.

Garey Park to open June 9

The City will celebrate the grand opening of Garey Park on June 9.

At 525-acres, Garey Park is one of the largest city parks in the state and is roughly 1.5 times the size of Zilker Park in Austin.

The park, which is located along the South San Gabriel River at 6540 RM 2243, was donated by Jack and Cammy Garey in 2004 along with $5 million for park development. In 2008 voters approved a bond for an additional $10 million for the park’s construction.

“The City is thankful for this tremendous gift from the Gareys that has become a public park for all of us to enjoy,” Mayor Dale Ross said. “Garey Park will be a regional destination for outdoor recreation as well as a beautiful Hill Country setting for special events. With features similar to those found in state parks, this park is surely a gem for the City of Georgetown, and one that our residents and visitors will enjoy for many years to come.”

Amenities at the park include a playground, a splash pad, a dog park, an equestrian arena, the Garey House event space, pavilions, 3 miles of hiking trails, and 6 miles of equestrian trails.

Other facilities include an entry gate, restrooms, and a maintenance facility.

“I am looking forward to the seeing the finished project and enjoying the park,” Jack Garey said. “There is a lot for everyone to enjoy.”

The City broke ground on the park in March 2017. Construction was completed by Ritter-Botkin Prime Construction Co. of Pflugerville and Austin-based Halff Associates completed the park’s design.

Details for the grand opening celebration are still being finalized.

Georgetown Parks and Recreation summer camp registration begins March 26

Georgetown Parks and Recreation will offer a variety of summer camps for area students from June 4-Aug. 10. Resident registration will begin Monday, March 26, and nonresident registration begins Tuesday, March 27.

Age requirements, pricing, and schedules vary for each program. Summer camps are not licensed child care programs. All fees listed are charged per week. Students must have completed Kindergarten to register.

Participants can select from:

  • Art Camp: Ages 5-12; June 25-29, July 9-13, July 16-20, and July 23-27; $175 resident/$220 nonresident
  • Adventure Camp: Ages vary from 11-17 based on program; Weekly sessions offered from June 4-Aug. 1; Rates vary based on program
  • Brandy Perryman Basketball Shooting Camp: Ages 7-16; June 11-14; $225 resident/$280 nonresident

Parks and Recreation hosts Eggstravaganza on March 24

The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department hosts the annual Eggstravaganza Easter egg hunt at San Gabriel Park on March 24.

Children are grouped by age to hunt for candy and toy-filled eggs, including a grand prize golden egg for each age division. Age divisions are age 2 and younger, ages 3-5, and ages 6-8. Egg hunts for age 2 and younger will begin at 9 a.m., ages 3-5 at 9:15 a.m. and ages 6-8 at 9:30 a.m.

The event will also include children’s games and activities, as well as a visit from the Easter Bunny.

The egg hunts will take place across from the Georgetown Livestock Show Barn, and parking is available along Lower Park Road and at the show barn.

Georgetown Parks and Recreation announces spring break camps

Georgetown Parks and Recreation will offer spring break camps for students March 12-16. Pricing and schedules vary for each program.

Participants can select from four camps:

  • Camp Goodwater (ages 5-12; $140 resident/$175 nonresident) includes a variety of activities such as games, crafts and weird science projects. The week will end with a field trip to Mt. Playmore.
  • Tennis Camp (ages 7-12; $140 resident/$175 nonresident) focuses on stroke instruction, footwork drills, court games and match play.
  • Junior Tennis Academy (ages 11-18; $100 resident/$125 nonresident) is designed for competitive junior players. Each session will include footwork drills, conditioning, fast pace drills, shot selection and some match play.
  • Teen Adventure Camp (ages 12-17; $250 resident/$315 nonresident) takes participants on a rock climbing and paddling adventure near the scenic Palo Pinto Mountains near Stephenville, Texas.

Update on City facilities and services

The Recreation Center is opening at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Texas Disposal Systems is picking up trash and recycling on the normal schedule on Tuesday. There is no GoGeo bus service in Georgetown on Tuesday. Other City of Georgetown offices and facilities are open normal hours on Tuesday.

Cupid’s Chase 5K and Fun Run on Feb. 3

Register now for the 23rd annual Cupid’s Chase 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, Feb. 3. The chip-timed 5K run/walk begins at 8 a.m. in downtown Georgetown at Seventh and Main streets and ends at the Bark Park on Holly Street. (A shuttle will take you back to the starting line).

Through Jan. 10, the registration cost is $18 for adults ages 13-54 and $16 for children age 12 and younger and seniors age 55 and older. Registration between Jan. 11 and Feb. 2 is $22 per person for all age groups and $25 on race day.

The Kids Fun Run for children age 8 and younger starts at 7:30 a.m. The course is a loop around the Courthouse. Registration is $10 before Feb. 3 and $15 on race day.

Participants receive a Cupid’s Chase T-shirt, while supplies last. Cupid costumes are encouraged. Strollers and dogs on a non-retractable leash are always welcome on the Cupid’s Chase course. T-shirts are not guaranteed for those who register on race day.

Awards will be presented to the top overall male and female winners and the overall male and female masters winners as well as the top three male and female finishers in each age division. Awards also will be presented to the top overall male and female City of Georgetown employee. If you are a City of Georgetown employee, be sure to indicate so when you register.

Swim with Santa at the Georgetown Recreation Center

Families are invited to swim with Santa on Friday, Dec. 15, at the Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave. Grab your suits and your camera and bring the entire family for a chance to swim with the big man himself! The event takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the indoor pool.

This holiday event will also include a screening of classic holiday films, such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Frosty Returns,” and “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” and hot chocolate and candy canes will be served.

This event is free for Georgetown Recreation Center members. Entry fees for nonmembers are: Free (newborns-3 years), $2 (ages 4-18 and age 55 and older), $3 (ages 19-54).
