Police Department

Warrant Unit

The Georgetown Police Department currently has one full-time warrant officer that is assigned to the Georgetown Municipal Court. The warrant officer's primary function is to locate individuals wanted on Georgetown Municipal Court warrants.

The Warrants are served by arrests or by accepting bond. Out of town warrants are attempted if they are within a reasonable distance. Long distance warrants are dealt with by contacting the defendant and dealing with it similar to a collection procedure. Another option is to contact local authorities and request a warrant service.

Other ways that warrants are cleared are by:

using an actual collection agency (for capias warrants only).
reporting warrants to the Texas Department of Public Safety driver's license database, which disables the defendants ability to renew their driver's license until the warrant is cleared with the City of Georgetown. This feature can be used by other Texas jurisdictions to discover if the person has a warrant, if the driver's license information is checked
contacting the out-of-state defendants appropriate state licensing authority and having their driver's license suspended. It is considered suspended until the warrant is taken care of in the City of Georgetown. This is a procedure allowed by the Nonresident Violator Compact of 1977.
coordinating and participating in warrant round ups. This can entail a local warrant round up or participating in large round ups involving many law enforcement agencies. The warrant unit has participated in many warrant round ups.

Other functions of the warrant officer is serving as the municipal court security which provides a safe environment for participants and staff members of the Georgetown Municipal Court, teen court, and city financial services. The warrant officer also serves as the transport officer to extradite prisoners located in other jurisdictions, if needed.
