Crime Prevention
Good security habits keep burglars and thieves away. That is but one reason why your Georgetown Police Department Officers want to build partnerships with you, the citizens we serve. Listed below are some tips on protecting your property and safety.
House Numbers - House numbers should be visible day and night from the street. Perhaps in two places.
Shrubbery - Is there a clear view of windows and doors? If not, trim.
Use Locks - Habitually locking the home, closing and securing garage doors is something that might be emphasized to all of us.
Hiding Keys - We probably all agree that we should avoid this practice.
Clean-up - Never leave small portable items, such as bikes and ladders, out that could be easily stolen. If you must, lock them securely. Your Routine - Vary your daily routine occasionally, to confuse any would-be burglar who may be watching your home.
Lighting - Proper lighting is probably the most efficient strategy to prevent crime. Turning interior lamps on with a timer is an inexpensive way to thwart criminals. Consider using a radio left playing when you are away to confuse a would-be intruder. External lighting is also important, but using outside lights only when you are away is a give-away that you're gone. There should always be some ambient lights on at night. Plan on using photocell switches for these outside lights.
Consider using motion-detecting security lights as a backup to your regular outdoor lighting.
Admitting Strangers - Always be careful about admitting strangers into your home. A wide angle door viewer is an absolute must.
Vacation Procedures - If you will be gone for an extended time, make arrangements to stop all mail and newspaper deliveries and have the lawn mowed. Leave a key with a trusted neighbor in case of an emergency. Also notify the Georgetown Police at 809 Martin Luther King Blvd. here in Georgetown.
