FAQ

Am I eligible for a defensive driving course?

If you are charged with a traffic offense, you may be eligible to request to take a driving safety course to dismiss the charge. The request must be made within fifteen (15) days from the date of the citation.


What must I do when I request defensive driving?

You are required to do the following within fifteen (15) days from the date of the ticket:

  1. plead no contest or guilty;
  2. present proof of insurance;
  3. present a valid Texas driver's license - No CDL - (military personnel-contact court;
  4. sign an affidavit;
  5. pay court costs and an administrative fee.

A course that has been approved by the Texas Education Agency must be completed within ninety (90) days from the date of the ticket. You are also required to present a certified copy of your driving record from the Department of Public Safety within ninety (90) days.


What makes me eligible for defensive driving?

  1. You must not have requested and taken a course for a traffic offense within twelve (12) months of the offense date;
  2. Are not currently taking the course for another traffic violation;
  3. Have not committed the offense of speeding 25 mph over the speed limit; and
  4. Have not committed one of the following offenses:
  • Failure to give information at the accident scene;
  • Leaving the scene of the accident;
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer;
  • Reckless driving;
  • Passing a school bus;
  • A serious traffic violation, which applies to commercial motor vehicle operators;
  • An offense in a construction maintenance zone when workers are present.


What happens if I do not complete a defensive driving course within the required time?

If you do not take the course in the time required and/or fail to present the court with a certificate of completion, the court will notify you to return for a show cause hearing to explain why you failed to show proof of completion. If you have good reason why you were unable to present your proof within the time required, the Judge may, but is not required to, grant you an extension. Your failure to appear in court, may result in a warrant for your arrest being issued. Additional fees and/or charges may also be filed.


Where do I find defensive driving programs?

Defensive driving programs can be found in the phone book under 'Driving Instruction.' These programs are private businesses that are not affiliated with the City of Georgetown.


What is deferred adjudication?

If you are not eligible for a Driving Safety Course, or you were cited for offenses other than moving violations, you may be eligible for deferred adjudication. Deferred Adjudication is a type of probation in which the judge will give you a series of conditions that you are to comply with by specific deadlines. To request deferred adjudication you must schedule an appearance before the judge in court, and enter a plea of no contest or guilty.


What methods of payment are accepted?

We accept money orders, cashier's checks, personal checks, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. When paying in person at the office, we also accept cash. Please do not send cash through the mail.


Are you open during lunch hours?

The Municipal Court Office is open Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Thur: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, with the exception of City of Georgetown holidays.


How long do I have to pay for my ticket?

You must contact the court within 15 days from the date of your ticket.


If I have a warrant, what do I do?

If you have a warrant with the City of Georgetown, you may post a bond to set a court date, or pay the fine in full. Once a warrant has been issued, we only accept payment by credit card, cashier's check, money order, or cash.


If my ticket isn't with the City of Georgetown, where else would I go?

Tickets issued by State Highway Patrol Officers or by Williamson County Sheriff's Deputies are not filed in the Georgetown Municipal Court, but are filed with one of the following Justices of the Peace. For contact information, see our "Other Courts" page.
