Street Rehabilitation Project

The City of Georgetown will be performing Street Rehabilitation projects in the following neighborhoods/streets in 2008:

  1. Thousand Oaks, Sierra Vista, San Gabriel Heights
  2. MLK, 10th & 15th Streets
  3. Northwest Blvd.
  4. Berry Creek, section 1
  5. S. College, 16th, and 17th

Street rehabilitation refers to the process of overlaying the existing asphalt with new asphalt. Prior to any construction tree trimming will need to be done to eliminate the chance of damaging any trees that overhang the streets.  There will also be curb repair and other point repairs done during this process.

The benefit of re-surfacing the streets as opposed to waiting until the street has more fully deteriorated is that the street degrades most rapidly at the surface, and if we correct the aging asphalt pro-actively, we can delay or even prevent costly and disruptive reconstruction projects. The City of Georgetown currently maintains 260 miles of streets and this pro-active process helps to keep our costs low and helps us to meet the Georgetown City Council's Pavement Condition Index standard.

Surface Defects To Be Addressed:

  • Ruts, Shoves, and Bumps
  • Patches and Utility Cuts
  • Reflective and Shrinkage Cracks
  • Weathering, Bleeding and Raveling

Tree Pruning

All tree pruning will be performed under the supervision of an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture.

All trees over the street will be raised to an average height of 14 feet. All cuts on oak trees will be painted soon after they are made. Pruning saws will be disinfected between oak trees. Pruning cuts will be done in the proper location; stub cuts will not be made.

Most pruning will stop at the curb, not to extend into residential yards. However, in some cases the "proper cut" will need to be made farther back into the tree within residential yards. If this is the case you will receive notice from the contractor prior to this happening, at which time you will have the choice of having the proper cut being made or the limb being cut at the curb.

After the street has been completed there might be trees that have been scorched by the paving machine. If this happens, the contractor will be back out to prune any scorched limbs. Project Description

This project will be the first project for the City of Georgetown to use a new one pass “repaving” technology. In this project, areas of failed pavement will be removed and a full depth repair will be completed. We will also replace segments of broken curb throughout the project area. Once the point repair is complete, the edge of the road next to the curb will be milled and the “Repaving” machine will the complete the project by reheating, scarifying, remixing asphaltic oil and relaying the existing asphalt along with an additional inch of new asphalt over the surface. Trees throughout the construction area will be trimmed to meet the City standard of 14 ft. this will be done by a certified arborist and inspected by the City’s arborist during and after completion. These steps are being taken to prevent any spread of disease throughout the area.

Project Manager: Joel Weaver 948-1300

Project Inspector: Chris Logan 930-8143

Engineer: KPA Engineering

Contractor: Cutler Repaving

Project Information

The pre-construction meeting was held 2-7-08, and work will begin the week of 2-11-08 in the Berry Creek Section 1 area of the project. Residents will see Davey Tree personnel in the area trimming the overhanging limbs to meet existing City code (14 feet above the pavement. Jointly with the tree trimming point repair will begin on failed areas of pavement, along with installation of ribbon curb around the corners at the intersections. The paving units will follow approximately 30 days from completion of the point repairs in this area.
