How Electricity Gets To You
1.Most electricity is made by turbine blades rotating at speeds high enough to produce electricity in a generator. The blades can be turned by water, steam or wind.
2.The electricity flows through metal conductors to a switchyard where the voltage is increased.
3.Electricity is transmitted through high-voltage power lines. The increased voltage allows the electricity to travel efficiently many miles to substations.
4.At substations, the voltage of the electricity is "stepped down" so it can be delivered through smaller lines to homes and businesses.
5.The electricity then travels to an electric-pole transformer that reduces the voltage to a level that can be used in your home.
6.Some consumers reduce the electricity they use with conservation or energy-efficiency measures, such as using energy-saving appliances, adding insulation to walls and ceilings, and installing a solar panel for special uses.
